Therapy Practice

McKenna has spent most of her adult life working with teens across the Bay Area. She specializes in teens and young adults who deal with anxiety, perfectionism, and addiction. Having ADHD herself, she also works with neurodivergent teens, helping them harness their full potential.

Services

  • Individual therapy

With a career dedicated to working with teens and young adults, McKenna brings a wealth of experience and passion to individual therapy sessions. She loves working one-on-one with teens, appreciating their high-intensity, curiosity, and emotionality. While often challenging, these traits are powerful tools for growth and self-discovery.

  • Family therapy

In family therapy, parents, siblings, and caregivers are invited to join sessions to provide a comprehensive understanding of family dynamics. Together, you can develop healthier ways of interacting and supporting one another, fostering improved communication, empathy, and resilience within the family unit.

  • Group Therapy

Adolescence is a time of significant growth and change, and peer support plays a crucial role during this period. Group therapy creates a unique space where teens can practice empathy, learn from one another, and build resilience together. Group therapy offerings include specialized sessions for nicotine/weed addiction and teen girl self-esteem.

Specialties

  • I often hear from teens that anxiety is something to avoid at all costs, believing its presence signals that something is inherently wrong. However, anxiety is a natural part of life, and rather than trying to eliminate it, we need to change our relationship with it.

In my practice, I help teens understand that anxiety is not an enemy to be feared but a signal to be understood and harnessed. Together, we work on strategies to manage anxiety effectively, allowing it to serve as a guide rather than a ruler. By shifting this perspective, teens learn to recognize anxiety's presence as a normal and manageable part of their lives, building resilience and gaining control over their emotional responses. This approach empowers students to face challenges with confidence, turning anxiety into a tool for growth and self-awareness.

  • Perfectionism is often socially sanctioned, especially among high-achieving teens and young adults. However, perfectionism doesn't always show up as achievement. Procrastination, fear of failure, and need for control are also signs a teen may be dealing with perfectionism.

In my practice, I help teens uncover the hidden damage beneath perfectionism’s rewards and guide them in shifting their focus from mere achievement to true fulfillment.

By addressing the underlying issues that drive perfectionism, we work together to redefine success in a way that promotes well-being and genuine satisfaction. Through this process, clients learn to embrace imperfection, develop healthier self-expectations, and find what they are truly passionate about.

  • Today, almost every teen is struggling with addiction, whether it's to screen time, nicotine, or weed. I approach this issue with genuine empathy, understanding that they are up against some of the most addictive substances in human history. Teens need real support and effective strategies to free themselves from these powerful dependencies.

These addictions prevent teens from experiencing and coping with challenging feelings, crucial steps in their emotional development. In my practice, I have helped countless teens quit or reduce their nicotine and weed use, as well as understand the downside of constant screen time. By addressing these issues, teens can learn to manage their emotions healthily and lead more fulfilling lives.

  • I work with teens who have ADHD, auditory processing issues, and anyone who learns differently or doesn't fit into a traditional school system. These teens possess unique superpowers—such as hyper fixation, creativity, novelty-seeking, and tenacity—that often go unrecognized in conventional settings.

My goal is to help these teens understand their strengths and develop strategies to harness these abilities and reach their full potential. By providing tailored support and guidance, I empower neurodivergent teens to thrive in their own way, embracing their differences and leveraging them as assets in their personal and academic lives. Through our work together, they gain confidence and learn to navigate a world that may not always be designed for their unique ways of thinking and learning.
